Already, it starts in a very interesting place. Michael is an interesting individual, revealing that this is his first day out of the hospital and he’s making the videos as a record for his doctor. It also happens to be his birthday, but we don’t get much information on that other than it’s not much to celebrate outside of being another year.

It’s clear from the way Michael speaks that he isn’t really expecting anyone to see this, as much as he greets people who potentially are. As much as this is a simple introduction, it hooks well. I want to know more about Michael. I want to see where this goes. It’s an interesting thought to have, considering this is something that should by all accounts not be open to people to wonder what happens next.

This is meant to be a record for a doctor, not necessarily something for anyone who passes by to view. There’s medical confidentiality for a reason, and maybe there’s something to be said about the sensationalizing of others' lives and the demand to have a window into them, but that’s getting more metatextual than analysis of the video itself. (maybe I’ll do a write up/video on web series and the position of the audience as a sort of voyeur in the future, because a lot of series are framed as personal accounts that really shouldn’t be so open to strangers) Although I suppose part of it being so public could be interpreted almost as a cry for help, reaching out to not feel as alone without outright saying ‘help me’ yet. Maybe it’s subconscious. A quiet hope that someone will see it and understand. I need to stop the train of thought here because I’m pulling in too much future knowledge into my generalized thoughts.

Everytime I watch the series with friends we almost always start this video with a chorus of “Hi Michael!” at the start. Not really relevant to any analysis thoughts, but thought I’d mention it because it’s a fun little thing.

“It’s 3:33 in the morning” I know how that is.

This first episode is really interesting to me. I suppose a part of it is the fact that it’s being used as/framed as a record/journal of how Michael is doing, but it still strikes me as interesting how open he is about why he’s making the videos, some of what he’s going through, etc. Maybe it’s just how different the internet was in 2011, but even still approaching the series as someone who had ‘never tell anyone online’ ingrained (although that didn’t work very well in the end… at least 5 people I’ve never met irl have my address and I’m sure more will receive it) it’s just a lot of personal information to give out. Still, with how the series is formatted it does make sense. It also already endears me to Michael a lot because I very quickly relate to him through some of what’s revealed.

Every time my friends and I watch the series and Michael says “It’s my birthday” we go “Happy birthday!!” and it’s another non-analysis thing that is just fun to mention.

“There’s not much to celebrate.” things that make me frown every watch… not series analysis so much as character-based stuff but Michael, especially early on but throughout the series, is one of those characters that I just want to reach through the screen to and tell he’s not entirely alone, partially because he reminds me of myself at a point where I felt alone or at the very least surrounded by people but isolated from them.

“Whoever’s watching, if anyone’s watching, if anyone cares, um, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m Michael.” This is a part I think about a lot. Both in like… the context of the narrative itself with Michael being an isolated individual as well as a more meta one of art and wanting people to care about the things you’ve made. Which I think is an interesting double thing to look at if that makes any sense at all. It’s also another quote from this episode that makes me sad and reminds me of myself in the past. Because “if anyone cares” is the sort of statement I would’ve easily tacked on to many things. When you’re in a certain place that’s a consistent question, ‘does anyone care’ and you want people to care. And I do care, and so many people cared and care about Michael as a character. I remember my first viewing of the series very well, and knowing of course that things were unlikely to go well with the tragic nature of the slenderverse (or at least what little I had seen of it at that point), I still hoped that maybe things would go ok. That something nice could happen. I hoped that maybe, just maybe, things would turn out alright for the protagonists for once.

This is one of my favourite videos. Short, simple, and full of a lot of interesting stuff going on. The two most important things are as follows: Michael is getting a new camera, and he has had a very interesting dream.

In the dream, he’s in a monochrome alley and sees a giant, dark clock. The clock’s face isn’t numbered, but it does have hands that spin wildly. He also sees someone else, a double of himself approaching the clock despite his best efforts to get their attention. He moves closer to his double, making contact before hearing a ringing noise, and then he wakes up. It is the first dream he has had in a long time, and given the context of things later in the series, it’s a very interesting one. I won’t go too deep into it here, but I’ll likely reference the dream as it becomes more relevant later on.

Very briefly the entire video is incredibly green. Not relevant to anything I just blinked and suddenly. Green. I wanted to just share that since this section is supposed to be my running thought process as the video goes. Anyway, moving on…

Awake for 18 hours, 3 hours of sleep over the last 3 days, feeling out of it… I know how that is. The worst part of insomnia is the worse the sleep schedule, the harder it is to sleep. You can be exhausted, running on fucking fumes, and you’re not going to get any reprieve from it until your body finally drops.

“I uh, bought myself a camera. This webcam stuff ain’t doing it for me, so… if I’m going to have to do these journals I might as well do it on something, uh, where you can actually see.” I was just thinking about how the previous video was 360p at most and this one is 240p at most. And also dark as shit. I like the vibe of the first two videos a lot, I think them being muddy and dark adds something, but I also have a lot of appreciation for being able to see in future entries.

The dreammmmms. The dreams are so interesting to me, especially the fact they seemingly only happen outside of the hospital. This description is also so interesting to me. I love the idea of this monochrome dreamscape. Also, what sounds like a clock ticking in the background as he talks. Could easily be different, other background noises but definitely sounds to me like the click of a pendulum swinging. Every time I rewatch this series I hear something new, and while that sound specifically I’ve heard before I still find it neat. “There’s this ominous sort of object in the middle of the alley way” An interesting thing fandom-wise (and something I’ve done myself) is a lot of people tend to ignore the clock in the alley imagery and instead opt for a forest clearing in art/writing. I wonder if it’s just because a forest seems ‘cooler’ or if it’s just forgetfulness, either way, I think the idea of the dream and the clock imagery itself in an empty, monochrome alleyway is really cool. Very LSD: Dream Emulator to me, hat man and all that jazz. Also, just the imagery of a giant scary grandfather clock in general is so cool. As a guy who digs clock imagery, I dig that immensely. The imagery of the double is also so so interesting and makes me think of a recurring dream I had in high school where I didn’t quite see my double but saw someone who I felt in my bones was my double and that’s a whole sidebar I’m now choosing not to go on.

The double walking towards the clock, attempts to get attention not working, the clock being devoid of anything on its face other than wildly turning hands… all of it is some really cool imagery. You get the feeling all of this is bad news like Michael does. It’s also interesting that the second contact is made he wakes up. Also interesting is the fact that this is the first dream Michael has had in a very long time.
